Job Description

Organization: Hillsboro Public Library 
Job Title: Library Clerk II 
Special Responsibility: Children’s Programming Services
Reports to: HPL Director 
FLSA Status: Nonexempt 
Salary Range: $12-$13.20/ hour 

Benefits: Paid leave begins accruing on the employee’s first day of employment and becomes available for use after the employee completes one year of employment; KPERS; paid holidays. 
Hours per week: Part-time position,  29.5 hours per week 
Schedule: Schedule: Variable schedule, generally during Monday–Friday business hours between 9:45 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with an occasional rotating Saturday shift from 9:45 a.m. to noon. Specific hours may fluctuate from week to week based on operational needs, but will not exceed 29.5 hours per week.

General Summary: The Library Clerk II performs library work across multiple service and support units of the library system including customer service for all ages, circulation, programming, events, outreach and janitorial duties as needed. This Clerk II position has the special responsibility of leading children’s programming services including Storytime (birth-5) and Summer Reading Program (birth-11). Assignments are varied and duties are carried out both independently and as a team, as the situation warrants. 

 Customer Service:  

  • Ability to interact with patrons of all ages in a professional, pleasant manner 
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints as able 
  • Answer phone calls and provide assistance in a pleasant manner 
  • Exhibit appropriate patron confidentiality 
  • Interpret patron information using the integrated library system software 
  • Negotiate patron fines and fees professionally and efficiently 
  • Handle monetary transactions carefully and accurately 
  • Provide technological support for patrons within the parameters of technology available at the library – computers, wi-fi connections, copier, fax machine, laminator 
  • Provide quality readers’ advisory when requested 

 Librarianship: 

  • Performs opening and closing procedures 
  • Checks materials in and out and renews materials quickly and accurately 
  • Issues and renews patron library cards 
  • Process collections materials in the appropriate manner and time frame 
  • Processes interlibrary loan and hold requests, including preparing items for the courier system 
  • Assist with shelving books and shelf-reading to keep the collection in good order 
  • Assist with ongoing book inventory and weeding 
  • Interpret library tools, such as integrated library system, catalog and collection, according to procedures 
  • Assist in collection development through suggestions and patron requests 
  • Assist in recording and compiling statistical data 
  • Actively promote library services, materials and activities through available resources 
  • Know and understand library policies and procedures and enforce them in a non-discriminatory way
  • Have a working knowledge of electronic devices and resources and a willingness to learn new skills 
  • Must be able to alphabetize  
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System 

 Programming & Events: 

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate engaging programs for children, including but not limited to Storytime and Summer Reading Program 
  • Utilize appropriate marketing strategies for programs, including flyer/social media design 
  • Gather program attendance data 
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of additional library events and programs as required 
  • Participate in outreach work in the community as required

  • Communicate accurately, clearly, honestly and respectfully to others

 Work Environment: 

  • Indoor conditions with occasional outdoor events as required 
  • Exposure to dust 
  • Potential exposure to book molds 
  • Exposure to cleaning solutions 
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet to mid-level depending on patron traffic and ongoing events and programming 
  • Occasionally required to work alone 

 Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • Requires sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting/moving books and pushing loaded book carts up to 45 pounds 
  • Light janitorial duties including dusting, vacuuming and trash disposal 
  • Occasional moving and/or building library furniture 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing 
  • Must be able to hear, comprehend and respond to library patrons both in person, electronically and in telephone conversations 
  • Must have visual ability to see computer screens 
  • Requires good hand dexterity 
  • Requires mental alertness, focus and attention to details 
  • Requires the ability to be interrupted and refocus frequently 
  • Must be able to lead children’s programming in an energetic, friendly, positive manner 
  • Must be flexible 

 Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

 Required:  

  • High School diploma or equivalent 
  • Ability to work the stated schedule, including rotating Saturdays 
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills 
  • Ability to learn and use the library’s integrated library system and other software 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patrons and coworkers 
  • Successful completion of any required background screening 
  • Ability to perform the essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation  

Preferred: 

  • Library, early-childhood, youth-services, education, or customer service experience 
  • Experience planning or presenting programs for children 
  • Familiarity with Dewey Decimal Classification and library circulation systems 
  • Experience with outreach, public speaking, or community events 
  • A love of reading and a working knowledge of authors and titles
